Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat 1/48

Salut maquettistes!

When I got the new Wildcat kits from Hobbyboss a few months ago, I knew I had to build them right away. So about 5 weeks ago I started the "Dual Combo" and here I want to show you one of them.

The kit is the F4F-4 Wildcat in 1/48 (No. 80328) and it's very easy to build. Everything fits together very good and so there is no need for putty. Even the fragile landing gear fits perfect and leaves the model stable on its wheels.

So, let's start the walk around ....

Again I used the colours from Agama. They are the same as on my Night Corsair - Blue Grey and Light Ghost Grey. For the interior I used Zinc Chromate Primer, also from Agama. Silver for the landing gear and Steel for the engine come from Revell.

The P & W 14-Cylinder-Twin-Wasp-engine looks very good by the way, thought you don't see much of it, once you've put the cowling around it.

Okay, here come a few more pictures ....

The original aircraft was part of the famous "Cactus Air Force" and was flown also by Capt. Marian Eugene Carl during the fierce fightings on Guadalcanal in 1942. But he also flew another Wildcat, the "Black 13", so I guess the kill marks on this aircraft stand for all pilots flying this mount .... Carl was the first Wildcat ace of the USMC in WW 2 and became a very high officer after the war. He died in 1998 and is buried at Arlington Cementry.

Just to show you that I really did build 2 Wildcats at once, this is the other one, a Martlet Mk. III of Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm ....

nice F4F, it seems that Agama paints are cheep of pigments because I find the color not blue enough.
Captain Marion Carl never flew this "white 2", it's a "hangar queen" choosen by Marion because he was n°2 in victories behind his friend John Smith, and, with a Master Gunnery Sergeant, quickly paint 17 flags of victories under the cockpit of both sides for a press conference at Espiritu Santu on October 15, 1942.
Marion Carl flew two Back 13, because he was shot down with his first on September 9.

merci beaucoup for the information about Carl. Actually I have only little informations about him and what I know is what I wrote down here. In fact, before I got this kit I didn't know him at all! Unfortunatly I have no book about the Wildcat Aces. Actually I know a little more about british Martlets than about american Wildcats, concerning the differences.
Don't worry about Agama colours. They are very good and fill a wide range of colours from many countries! As I wrote I used the same Blue Grey as on my Night Corsair. Somewhere in the "Corsair Aces" book the colour is named as FS 35189 and that's what I used also on this Wildcat. For me it fits.
